Preparing for spring and a new season of house and yard care is on every homeowner’s mind this time of year. Especially when “false spring” arrives, teasing us with warmer weather when we all know more snow and cold are likely coming. But just because spring isn’t quite here yet doesn’t mean you can’t get ready for it now. Your hometown team at Village Ace Hardware is here to help you do just that. Consider this your “spring cleaning list” for your Glendale-area home. Have questions? We’ve got answers. Call us today at 414-961-1143.
Start Preparing for Spring by Getting Tools Ready
To really hit the ground running when real spring comes around, make sure your gardening and lawn care equipment are in top shape. That includes:
Lawn Equipment Maintenance
Have a team like the one here at Village Ace service your mower now. We’ll ensure all working parts are cleaned and tuned, and sharpen mower blades for clean cutting come spring.
Taking Stock of Your Hand Tools
Your lawn mower’s blades aren’t the only thing that could use sharpening and care. Do the same for tools like pruners, shears, and shovels.
Cleaning Out Bird Feeders
The birds are looking forward to spring just as much as the rest of us. Cleaning bird feeders now with fresh seed is a great way to welcome them back.
Preparing for Spring by Cleaning Up After Winter
Winter can be just as tough on your home and lawn as it is on you. Inspecting your property for items that need attention is key to prepping for spring. Make sure your list includes:
Checking the Sump Pump
Before the snow melts and the heavy spring rain comes, make sure your sump pump is operational to prevent flooding.
Cleaning Gutters and Downspouts
It’s common for winter debris to wind up in your gutters and downspouts, which can block water from running away from your foundation. Simply ensuring all that is clear will help keep your home dry.
Monitoring Your Lawn
As the snow recedes, it may leave behind some snow mold, or circular patches of matted grass. Simply rake these areas—gently!—once the soil is dry enough to help the grass breathe.
Gardening From the Inside Out
Though “false springs” make it feel nice and warm outside, the ground is still unfortunately cold and hard. That makes any outdoor gardening impossible at this time. But you can counter that by starting to prepare your garden for spring with indoor seeding.
Early March
Get a head start by planting slow-growing flowers such as begonias and snapdragons.
Mid-to-Late March
This is the best time to start seeds for vegetables like peppers, eggplants, and cabbage.
Other Do’s and Don’ts
While you can start indoor seeding for many things before real spring, tomatoes shouldn’t be one of them. Hold off until late March or early April on those. You can also start planning the layout of your garden for the year and finalize seed orders.
